Student occupational therapists, guided by a registered occupational therapist provide assessment, treatment and support with clients of all ages who experience developmental disabilities. They share new techniques and offer evidence-based in-service education with staff to capacity build competency and skills in-situ. Students complete legacy projects aimed at improvement of services that live beyond their onsite engagement in India.
Impact
Occupational therapy (OT) is a scarce resource in many areas of the world. Through this partnership, operationalized by Handi-Care International (Dr. Dinesh Krishna), OT joins physicians, physiotherapists, and other health care professionals to provide interprofessional services which would otherwise be inaccessible for people in this setting. Both clinical and outreach programs that engage with people living in rural and remote areas are provided.
Student Experience
Students learn and contribute in direct and indirect service with clients and teams working with individuals with developmental disabilities in urban, rural and remote settings in India. They gain unique understanding and cultural knowledge, and work with the challenges associated with an under-sourced environment. This in turn prepares student occupational therapists to be highly resourceful, problem-solving, creative and innovative in the areas in which they will practice in their careers.
