Dr. John Harvey, Dr. Gloria Isaza and other members of the Division of Opthalmology have been a key part of Medical Ministry International (MMI) outreach teams for 20 years. Dr. Harvey now serves on the Board of Directors and recently received the 2016 Hamilton Health Sciences Medical Staff Association Humanitarian Award for his volunteer work.
Impact
Hundreds of patients with eye disorders are treated on each mission, with MMI working in 14 countries worldwide. McMaster residents and medical students have joined the teams. During each regular visit to Bolivia, the team might see 4000 patients, give away 3000 pairs of eyeglasses, and complete 200-300 cataract operations, strabismus and other eye surgery.
Student Experience
Postgraduate and undergraduate students participate in medical mission outreach teams, help care for patients and teach and learn with local partners.
