Description:


Every year in Pakistan, over 4 million pregnancies are unintended and up to 25% of those are terminated through induced abortion, many of which are clandestine. Midwives must often cope with complications, however they have limited training to do so. Our team is actively addressing this challenge by creating an accessible and informative tool that can be widely used by midwives in Pakistan. As the perinatal care provider, midwives would benefit from evidence-based knowledge and skills to facilitate access to family planning, safe abortion and post-abortion care, which in turn will improve lives of women and decrease demands on the health system. To facilitate these necessary improvements, our team has developed an international partnership with the National University of Medical Science in Pakistan. Together, we are creating an interactive e-book and training module on family planning and post-abortion care for midwives to provide quality care to women in need. With our e-book, we share McMaster’s vision of facilitating global engagement in education and knowledge generation within the field of midwifery. With improved knowledge and skill, midwives can provide safe care to avoid unnecessary complications and advocate for reproductive choice. Our event for MacGlobal will consist of a 15-minute PowerPoint presentation to inform the McMaster community about our initiative which addresses the lack of post-abortion care and cultural training concerns (e.g. fostering nonjudgmental attitudes, teaching women about their reproductive rights etc.) in Pakistan. An overview of the e-book content will also be available for review. Following the presentation, an open platform will be available for questions and further discussion.
