Daughters for Life Scholar Sara Saad Graduates

As part of McMaster’s Office of International Affairs’ commitment to supporting global talent and capacity building for higher education at an international level, it partnered with the Daughters for Life Foundation by offering full undergraduate scholarship awards to female students from the Middle East who face socio-economic hardship. Sara Saad, one of the award recipients, has recently graduated with a major in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics.

The Office of International Affairs is thrilled to extend heartfelt congratulations to Sara Saad on her remarkable achievement of completing her Bachelor of Engineering degree while being a Daughters for Life Scholarship recipient. Sara’s journey is nothing short of inspiring, and it serves as a powerful testament to her resilience and determination.

Office of International Affairs Director Dr. Amira El Masri and Project Officer Tania Hakim met with Sara to congratulate her and conducted the following interview with Sara following her Convocation in June:

Please tell us a little about yourself.

“I am Sara, a recent graduate from McMaster University with a major in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. My passion lies in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). In my leisure time, I enjoy taking walks, reading, and engaging in 3D printing.”

How did you hear about the collaboration between the Daughters for Life Foundation and the Office of International Affairs at McMaster and the award? And what does this award mean to you? 

“The journey began back in my home country, Egypt, during my time at Maadi STEM High School. In my senior year, while searching for scholarships and seeking advice from fellow seniors, a friend with similar interests shared this opportunity with me. Learning that two girls from our school had received this award in previous years motivated me to apply.

This scholarship holds immense significance for me, as it reminds me of my seventeen-year-old self-arriving in Canada for a scientific research competition all by myself. It fueled my determination to pursue my studies in Canada. When I discovered the DFL collaboration and McMaster University scholarship, I was thrilled to apply. Although the selection process aimed to choose only one girl each year from the Middle East, I had faith in my abilities and gave it my best shot.”

How has your experience at McMaster been? 

“My experience at McMaster has been truly wonderful. The university’s supportive and nurturing environment is like a rare gem, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be a part of it. Throughout my journey, I have received invaluable help and guidance from the faculty, professors, and dedicated individuals who have all played an essential role in my academic and personal growth.

During my first academic year, I encountered challenges that I was able to overcome thanks to the support from the University’s faculty and teaching assistants. Their encouragement and commitment to fostering a positive learning environment made all the difference.

Amidst the COVID pandemic during the third-year winter semester, I faced a personal loss that deeply affected me. However, the unwavering support from my family, friends, coworkers, and members of the McMaster community proved to be invaluable during that challenging time.

In particular, I cherish the conversations and wise advice that I received from mentors who provided comfort and strength when I needed it most. Additionally, my interactions with faculty members who shared my passion for 3D printing in the mathematics department added to my enjoyable learning experience.

In sum, my time at McMaster University has been a transformative journey filled with personal growth and gratitude. The collective support and mentorship from the university community have been instrumental in shaping the person I am today.”

Please tell us about one achievement that you are particularly proud of. 

“On the personal front, I take immense pride in making my family proud and serving as a positive role model for girls with similar aspirations. My family, especially my mother and late grandpa, have played pivotal roles in my life, and I cannot imagine a better life without their support. 

On the professional front, one particular achievement that stands out is my nineteen-month co-op opportunity with AMD, as well as my work with ALSTOM. During this period, I had the privilege to work with the Signal Integrity Department at AMD and the Signaling Installation team at ALSTOM. Both experiences were truly transformative, allowing me to immerse myself in cutting-edge research, industry practices, and real-world projects. 

Collaborating with professionals in the field and contributing to leading organizations like AMD and ALSTOM has enriched my skill set and provided me with invaluable insights into the industry. These experiences not only bolstered my technical expertise but also instilled in me a sense of confidence and determination to pursue a successful career in my field of passion.”

What are your future plans? 

“Looking ahead, I am eager to delve into the fields of machine learning and software development, seeking to build relevant expertise. Additionally, I have aspirations to continue my education through postgraduate studies.”

How do you plan to pay it forward? 

“Paying it forward is always on my mind, and I have both short and long-term plans for it. In the short term, I aim to help any girl seeking guidance on studying abroad by sharing academic resources and offering support. Additionally, I would be delighted to collaborate with the international affairs team at McMaster University and Daughters for Life on development initiatives. 

In the long term, my vision involves establishing a foundation that provides free STEM education for women of all ages. The foundation would also assist them in finding job opportunities, scholarships, and fellowships, empowering women to reach their full potential.”
