Archaeological excavation for 6 weeks per summer with international team of scholars & students (many from Mac) contributing to debates on early human dispersals and comparative hominin beahviour. Community engagement a fundamental aspect of work, together with experiments in how to represent such early sites. Training project for students, intellectual space for junior scholars, high profile project with dedicated outreach/social media energies.
Impact
Academic impact: global significance (hominin dispersals & behaviour; representing the Palaeolithic; community engagement), regional significance (Aegean prehistory).
Student Experience
The team has consistently included 6-12 McMaster undergraduates (non fee-paying, they are chosen on merit and are fed and housed), plus a small number of graduates. One McMaster alum has just completed their MA on the project at Trent. These undergrads have received EE grants (n=6?), USRA’s (n=4), and some have become co-authors on conference presentations and publications. The students receive in-field and in-lab training, some rising to positions of on-site supervisor, and while most come from Social Sciences I have also had two students from Sciences. I have also employed four students as project RA’s.
