Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC) have a high injury mortality rate compared to the developed world. A trauma system that effectively utilizes a trauma registry reduces injury mortality and improves trauma care. Hospitals in LMICs face significant challenges in implementing trauma registries and improving the quality of their trauma systems. The feasibility of implementing a trauma registry in Uganda that features a Geographic Information System (GIS) has not been previously assessed. The project is in collaboration with Ugandan surgeon Dr. Martin Situma.
Impact
Local nurse research assistants have entered over 1000 patient visits in the Mbarara Trauma Database and analysis is underway. Also a new electronic medical record system for the hospital is being developed by the McMaster team in collaboration with Innovative Canadians for Change (ICChange).
Student Experience
The McMaster postgraduate trainee developed and led implementation of the research proposal, including site visit, training for data collectors, and EMR development.
