We are examining the ability of the heart to sustain blood pressure and flow during low oxygen conditions in high-altitude deer mice. Several experiments, some completed and some ongoing, are measuring cardiovascular physiology using a variety of techniques that merge our collective expertise (vascular surgery, blood pressure using arterial catheters, in vivo pressure-volume loop catheters in the left and right ventricles).
Impact
1. Fundamental science discovery. 2. Establishing a new research collaboration between McMaster and the University of North Texas.
Student Experience
My Ph.D. student Oliver Wearing, and a U. North Texas Ph.D. student (Derek Nelson), worked together to carried out part of the research in this project.
