The School of Nursing and PAHO co-hosted a summit (2015) involving an international team of academics and WHO/PAHO leaders. We developed a strategy for APN role implementation in primary health care in Latin America and the Caribbean to address health services gaps. With U.S. Collaborating Centres, we hosted a six-part international webinar series on APN implementation; hosted 2 Chilean professors (2017), produced two articles and participated on a Pan American Colloquium panel (Mexico), and a working group to develop nurse practitioner competencies for primary health care in Latin America.

Impact

According to the WHO, human resources are the most important part of the health system. Nurses and midwives are frontline professionals who use an integrated and comprehensive approach including health promotion, disease prevention, and treatment. McMaster’s WHO Collaborating Centre in Primary Care and Health Human Resources and the Canadian Centre for Advanced Practice Nursing Research have shown continuous leadership in the development of the Advanced Practice Nursing role in Latin America

Student Experience

McMaster University School of Nursing seeks to ensure that our nursing education includes international, intercultural and global dimensions. Our projects are collaborative endeavours involving an international team and are grounded on an ongoing, complex, evidenced-based approach. Since our initial summit held at McMaster University in 2015, we have continued to provide opportunities to foster student learning. Our students participated in the summit, as well as in with an international audience in the webinar series and met with two Chilean professors’ visit to understand our APN graduate education and practice. In supporting the implementation strategy for advanced practice nursing in primary health care in Latin America and the Caribbean, Drs. Bryant-Lukosius and Valaitis have produced two articles and Dr. Bryant-Lukosius presented as an invited panelist at the XV Pan American Colloquium of Nursing Research, Mexico City, Mexico, 2016. There is clear evidence that our international contribution is substantive in nature and provides continuous engagement for our nursing students.
