The Age-Friendly University (AFU) network consists of institutions of higher education around the globe who have endorsed the ten principles of and AFU and committed to becoming more age-friendly in their programs and policies. The principles of an Age-Friendly University were developed by an international, interdisciplinary team headed by Dublin City University (DCU), and were formally launched by the Irish Prime Minister in 2012. In 2017, McMaster University signed on to the global Age-Friendly University Network. Through this partnership, we have continued to see different and new ways to realize the principles of an AFU in our different international contexts. We have also been able to learn from one another during COVID-19 new ways we can continue to support older adults members of our university, local, and extended communities in times of change and uncertainty.

Allison Dubé


McMaster Alumni













Allison Dubé is a proud McMaster alumni. After completing her BA in History and English there, she continued her education with an MA and PhD in Canadian History from Queen’s University. She served for two years in the Ontario Public Service for two years before returning to McMaster University to work as a Project Manager at the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA). In her role there, she works with both campus and community partners to encourage people to recognize the value that older adults bring to our communities, combat ageism and negative perceptions of aging our society holds, and support individuals to learn more about how they can continue to live longer and remain in good health. In this role, she also chairs the University’s Age-Friendly University Committee..
