The university's live coding laptop orchestra, the Cybernetic Orchestra, meets regularly on campus - especially in the Networked Imagination Laboratory - and makes music collaboratively using code. Frequently, this involves direct collaboration with, or streaming to or from, international collaborators and audiences in diverse countries.
Impact
The Cybernetic Orchestra is recognized internationally as a uniquely large, open and consistently active live coding ensemble. It has advanced live coding (and electronic music) practice by performing in front of international audiences (live and via streaming), by collaborating with diverse partners, and by including ever new members (principally from the student population on campus at McMaster).
Student Experience
Students from across campus are free to join the orchestra which runs on an open, participatory model. In addition to participating directly in the orchestra as performers, students from diverse faculties have been employed as research assistants in projects connected to the orchestra’s practice.
