Dr. Stephen Foster was a graduate of McMaster's first MD class, went on to train in surgery, and has spent his career working in Angola. As the hospital Director, he opened the Medical Centre of Lubango in 2006 , with 22 staff treating 60 patients on the first day. Today, hospital staff numbers 130. including 2 full-time & 5 part-time doctors, providing daily consultation to over 60 patients. The hospital has an emergency room operating 24/7, operating room, wards, labs, and x-ray services. McMaster students and surgical residents regularly undertake electives under Dr. Foster's supervision.
Impact
Under Dr. Foster's supervision, dozens of Canadian students and postgraduate trainees have learned about surgery in low-resource settings, have participated in clinical care and research, and have built on these experiences to further their involvement in global surgery as part of their careers. A number of students have completed surgical research projects, and presented at international meetings such as the Bethune Round Table conference.
