The 2 decade long postgraduate training partnership between McMaster, St. Joseph's International Outreach Program, Uganda and Haiti has expanded to include orthopedic, plastic, pediatric, general and thoracic surgery. An orthopedic team including UBC visits Uganda annually. Since 2015, McMaster's Chair of Surgery visited Uganda, McMaster surgeons led a laparoscopy workshop in Kampala, and a Ugandan orthopedic surgeon trained at McMaster. Several McMaster postgraduate trainees did surgical electives in Uganda. Orthopedic visits to Haiti now collaborate with Team Broken Earth.
Impact
Orthopedic skills, evidence-based surgery, and OR nursing workshops in Uganda have trained dozens of local surgeons and nurses to improve patient care. The collaboration has supported surgical faculty and service development in 3 Ugandan centres: Kampala, Mbarara and Gulu.
Student Experience
McMaster surgical residents experience supervised surgical training in low-resource settings and expand their cultural competencies.
