In her position as the first midwife in the Netherlands to ever to be appointed Professor she has worked with the university and with graduate students to establish the Midwifery Science program at VUmc University. Since her appointment 7 PhD students have studied under her supervision. Six have completed their degrees, and 1 continues. Students worked on the large DELIVER cohort study, resulting in more than 40 publications. The Midwifery Science program is now running independently of her supervision and has been successful in obtaining national research funding to sustain their program.
Impact
The project was undertaken in acknowledgement that the education system for midwives in the Netherlands ought to be housed in the university setting along side the primary care medicine and dentistry. The establishment of the Midwifery Science department was a strategic step in that direction.
Student Experience
There was no direct impact on students at McMaster, although several Dutch PhD students visited, and provided lectures to the McMaster undergraduate midwifery students. Contacts made through the program allowed for placements of midwifery students for their one month electives with midwifery practices in the Netherlands.
