Due to violence in the Rakine region of Myanmar, a massive population movement has resulted in over 600,000 people being displaced into refugee camps in southern Bangladesh. With almost no resources of their own, the global humanitarian community is responding to provide shelter, WASH and health services. As a delegate for the Canadian Red Cross Emergency Response Unit, I worked on the first team deployment to the region to help provide primary health services for the most vulnerable and hardest to reach refugees. As senior medical officer I provided both direct and indirect services.
Impact
The project provided health care to previously unserviced vulnerable individuals. It also established an access system for the refugees, referral pathways and built capacity within the local system to mitigate health risks for the future. This was done in a culturally sensitive manner, focusing on equity and accountability
Student Experience
-fostered cultural intelligence and sensitivity -informs the need for a greater focus on internationalization of the curriculum
