This project was started in 2000 with regular site visits and teaching by Dr. Dauphin. A regular program of supporting Ugandan anesthesia residents for 6 month training rotations at McMaster University was instituted. In addition, there was a reciprocal program.
Impact
Anesthesia care in Uganda has been substantially upgraded (Ether is no longer used). Anesthesia care is well established now to a comparable level of delivery in the teaching hospitals in Uganda. The educational program has been highly successful with many graduates acquiring leadership positions. Education exchange is at an equitable level and ongoing.with McMaster residents training in Uganda for elective international rotations.
Student Experience
The impact has been substantial in stimulating resident interest, engagement and participation. Every year, the application process to do an international anesthesia elective in Uganda is highly competitive. Residents have given talks on their learning and experiences in Uganda. One resident has gone on to do a fellowship in Global Health.
