The project involves assisting in anesthesia residency curriculum development, assisting in the training and evaluation of anesthesia residents and the provision of specialty training opportunities through 4 month overseas training at McMaster University for residents from Guyana. There are opportunities for faculty from McMaster University to participate in residency training and faculty development in Guyana through a partnership with the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society International Education Fund.
Impact
We have assisted in the development of the anesthesia residency training program in Guyana. We supported the training of 3 anesthesia residents from Guyana for 4 month specialty training rotations at McMaster University. Three faculty from our department have served as external examiners for the Guyana program. We collaborate with the Canadian Anesthesiologist Society International Fund (CASIEF) to assist in resident training and faculty development in Guyana.
Student Experience
This experience has given the Guyanese residents training in areas that are not available in Guyana as well as exposure to different perspectives and practices in anesthesia. In turn, the McMaster faculty and residents learn from the experiences, practices and knowledge of the residents from Guyana. They also gain a better appreciation of international context of anesthesia practice and challenges.
