Australia and Canada are among the few countries with an explicit policy to import migrant health professionals. The project studies skilled migration trends in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and physiotherapy and assess key migration pathways on employment and registration from 2006-16. It will explore the ethical and governance challenges inherent in health workforce migration; compare Australia’s policies with Canada’s; and define the role of migrants compared to domestic health professionals in terms of workforce quality and sustainability.
Impact
Will inform ongoing deliberations regarding immigration policy for health professionals as well as licensure processes.
Student Experience
Both graduate and undergraduate students are developing skills relevant to the analysis of large datasets in the context of addressing policy questions.
