The objective of this research program is to determine if early in-bed cycling improves physical function in critically ill patients. In-bed cycling is a novel technology that could help critically ill, MV patients receive gentle exercise very early during their ICU stay to prevent or attenuate lower limb muscle weakness.
Impact
Early exercise, with in-bed cycling as the first component of a rehabilitation program, has the potential to improve physical and functional outcomes following critical illness. If effective, early in-bed leg cycling could decrease disability and give ICU survivors an important advantage in the trajectory of their long road to recovery.
