As a member of the CRC Emergency Response Unit I travelled to Nepal within 48 hours after the devastating 2015 earthquake. At the direction of the Health Cluster we went on to the remote region of Dunche and established a temporary hospital, including operating facilities, at the site of their destroyed regional hospital. Perched on a mountainside at 1765 m we provided full medical services to the region, including mobile clinics and inpatient services. Working with the community to strengthen local capacity, facilities were turned over to them at four months and still operate today.
Impact
Immediate impact included delivering lifesaving interventions in the earthquake aftermath as well as reestablishing regional health services. Significant teaching occurred with health care providers and community members to improve the quality of care being delivered even after the CRC staff departure.
