A multi-centre, non-blinded, randomized Phase III trial comparing two radiation treatment modalities, whole breast irradiation compared to accelerated partial breast irradiation using 3D CRT (experimental), to be performed in women following breast conserving surgery with a new diagnosis of histologically confirmed DCIS only or invasive carcinoma of the breast without evidence of metastatic disease. Patients will be followed indefinitely to assess for acute and late toxicity, cardiac toxicity, recurrent disease, new primary cancer, cosmetic outcome, quality of life and overall survival.
Impact
APBI treatment is currently being widely promoted and used throughout North America. There is an increasing risk that this treatment will be adopted without proper evaluation. Currently there is no trial evaluating 3D CRT alone which is best suited to a pubic health system like Canada. This study is a large randomized trial to evaluate 3D CRT compared to the current standard of whole breast irradiation. If effective, Canadian women will be able to be treated in a shorter time frame a less cost.
