A family of preference-based measures of health-related quality of life (The Health Utilities Index) were developed with colleagues at McMaster University and applied to populations of children with cancer, initially in Canada and the United States. Subsequent studies were undertaken in Italy, Cuba, Uruguay and the countries of Central America. Most recently these have focused on the relationship of health-related quality of life to nutritional status. As the instruments generate utility scores it has been possible to undertake economic evaluation of the care of children with cancer.
Impact
The loss of health has been quantified, in terms of quality-adjusted life years, in relation to treatment intensity in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Canada and the United States), and in association with autologous stem cell transplantation in children with neuroblastoma (Canada). Economic evaluation showed equivalence of two common treatment protocols for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Canada, United States and Italy). Burden of illness was measured in Central America
Student Experience
