The twelve essays in our book feature not only well known commentators from new perspectives (Arendt, Blanchot, Derrida, Agnon, Nabokov, Borges) but also highlight the importance of lesser known critics and artists (Werner Kraft [contemporary of Walter Benjamin], French philosopher Sarah Kofman, Israeli poetry, Israeli Palestinian writer Sayed Kashua). One essay covers the recent Kafka Trial in Israel regarding Kafka’s literary legacy. Other contemporary approaches include Kafka in film & animal studies, the graphic novel, Kafka in British and American Counterculture (Burroughs, Ginsberg).
Impact
The contributors (from Israel, Canada, USA, Germany, Belgium) focus on philosophers, writers, cartoonists, poets and film producers (from Germany, Canada, France, USA, England, Israel) who have engaged in a dialogically creative exchange with Kafka’s work and placed him within a (post)modern, cultural/political context. Our dialogue with Kafka highlights the global significance of his impact on modernity. This cultural recycling of Kafka will be of interest to contemporary cultural studies.
Student Experience
I hired an undergraduate, fourth year student at McMaster through my SSHRC grant. She learned to help us edit the articles and has become very competent working with the software Zotero, entering and checking bibliographical sources.
