The Scholars at Risk Program (SARP) at McMaster University is a dedicated funding initiative established in 2022 to support faculty, departments, and research centres in hosting and employing forcibly displaced researchers and scholars. These individuals may be refugees, internally displaced within their home countries, or living in regions affected by conflict and violence, where their safety, academic freedom, and ability to continue their work are severely compromised. Through this program, McMaster seeks to uphold the principles of academic freedom, global collaboration, and social responsibility by providing scholars at risk with meaningful opportunities to continue their research and teaching in a safe and supportive environment.
McMaster University has a longstanding commitment to supporting displaced and at-risk scholars, and the establishment of SARP has strengthened and formalized these efforts. Over the years, the university has welcomed nine scholars from diverse regions and disciplines, offering them not only professional opportunities but also a sense of community and stability during uncertain times.
In the past year, the program successfully supported the arrival of a new scholar who joined McMaster’s campus in January. From the outset, faculty members, administrative staff, and colleagues across the university played an integral role in facilitating a smooth and welcoming transition. This included assistance with onboarding processes, navigating institutional systems, and accessing the resources needed to resume academic work effectively.
Beyond logistical support, significant effort was made to ensure the scholar felt integrated into the academic community. Faculty mentors and peers provided guidance on research projects, collaboration opportunities, and teaching expectations. As a result, the scholar was able to re-engage with their research agenda and contribute meaningfully in the classroom, enriching the academic experience for students and colleagues alike.
The impact of the Scholars at Risk Program extends well beyond individual placements. By welcoming scholars who have faced displacement and adversity, McMaster fosters a more diverse and globally informed academic environment. These scholars bring unique perspectives, expertise, and lived experiences that enhance research innovation, teaching, and cross-cultural understanding across the institution.
Overall, McMaster University has demonstrated continued success through the Scholars at Risk Program, reinforcing its role as a leader in supporting academic freedom and humanitarian efforts within higher education. The program not only provides a lifeline for scholars in need but also strengthens the university community by promoting resilience, inclusivity, and the free exchange of ideas.
