McMaster Professor Emeritus Dr. Dawn Martin-Hill brings Indigenous voices and knowledges to discussions on global sustainability and governance at 2025 Together | Ensemble conference on Collective Action for a Sustainable Future

From May 26-27, 2025, McMaster participated in the 7th annual Together | Ensemble conference, Collective Action for a Sustainable Future: Collaboration Across Generations, Sectors, and Knowledge Systems, hosted by the University of Calgary. This event brought together key stakeholders from across academia, civil society, government, and the private sector, to help address Canada’s most critical sustainability challenges. McMaster Professor emeritus, Dr. Dawn Martin-Hill, was one of these stakeholders.  

On May 26, Dr. Martin-Hill, Academic Co-Chair of the Indigenous Education Council and Professor of Indigenous Studies, attended Together | Ensemble 2025 as a panelist speaker for the session “Transforming Global Governance – United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” Inspired by the Transforming Global Governance and Indigenous Knowledge sections of the United Nations Pact for the Future, this panel sought to centre Indigenous voices and Knowledges in discussions on sustainability and global governance.  Dr. Martin-Hill’s experience and expertise in solution-based research in Indigenous health, community, Knowledge Systems and medicines, decolonization, and leadership, made her an invaluable addition to the panel. Her current work includes the Ohneganos water research, training, and education project, and research to find community-led solutions to improve First Nations water quality.  

Together | Ensemble is a national Canadian conference devoted to tracking progress on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The University of Calgary serves as host of the UN Sustainability Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Canada. McMaster University is a proud member of this group since 2021, aiming to research and develop innovative and practical solutions for sustainable development.
