Global Citizens in Action: Sixteen Young Canadians Embark on Internship Journey in Ghana and Liberia

Sixteen young Canadians have just embarked on an unforgettable adventure, living and working in Liberia and Ghana as part of Cohort 2 of the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP). This isn’t just about travel; it’s about growth, impact, and stepping into the world with purpose.
Their journey began on July 20 with the Global Citizenship Training (GCT), an online course designed by Dr. Lydia Kapiriri from McMaster University. The course challenged the interns to think deeply about ethical engagement, cultural humility, and the historical and political landscapes of their host countries. Through interactive modules, journaling, and guided reflection, they began developing the mindset of true global citizens.
That momentum carried into a high-energy, four-day pre-departure training at the Empowerment Squared Office in Hamilton from September 2-5. Interns tackled budgeting, travel logistics, and intercultural communication while meeting with host organizations, mapping out goals, and creating team flags representing their shared values. A downtown scavenger hunt brought the group together, building trust and adaptability in the most creative way possible.
McMaster’s Student Success Centre (SSC) also played a vital role, leading a dedicated session on safety and security while abroad. Interns walked away with practical tools and peace of mind, knowing they’re supported every step of the way.
Now on the ground in Liberia and Ghana, interns are contributing to community-driven projects that reflect each country’s unique needs. In Ghana, efforts are underway to enhance educational outcomes and environments in rural areas, with a particular focus on promoting gender equity. In Liberia, they’re supporting grassroots organizations tackling substance abuse, drug addiction, and mental health challenges. Across both placements, interns gain hands-on experience in research, outreach, and organizational development while building leadership skills and global awareness that will shape their futures.
As Cohort 2 settles into their placements, their stories are already unfolding: stories of resilience, collaboration, and transformation. For those wondering what their next step might be, IYIP offers more than an opportunity; it offers a beginning.
