You snap to your feet, stumble onto the stage. Your microphone fails, projector cuts out, you mumble opening remarks, swallow your name. Or it’s a Zoom call, an important interview, and you fumble with your camera or microphone, ask if you can be heard. Or it’s your high-octane, rapid-fire pre-recorded video. Your first impression: it can’t be undone. The rest of your pitch confirms your audience’s bias and impressions.

In this session, we draw on our experience: writing and directing plays, running entrepreneurial and exhibition booths, mentoring and coaching candidates for competitive presentations, as well as delivering webinars, workshops and award-winning talks around the world. We discuss story, first impressions, ethics, citation, subtext, staging, authenticity, articulation, scripts, images, slide design, staging, stage presence, and respecting your audience.

Speakers

John Bandler, OC, McMaster professor emeritus, is an award-winning engineer, entrepreneur, innovator, artist, speaker, and author of fiction, including stage plays. See YouTube. See also his 2014 TEDx McMaster U presentation. He has published 500+ papers, pioneered space mapping, sold his start-up Optimization Systems Associates Inc. to Hewlett-Packard, been honoured by a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, is an Officer of the Order of Canada, and winner of the 2018 Gold Medal from Professional Engineers Ontario. He has coached 100’s of individuals for presentations, and initiated the first ever 3MT® competition at the IEEE International Microwave Symposium in 2017, co-organizing it annually, virtually in 2020 and 2021.

Daniel Tajik is a PhD candidate in Electrical and Computer Engineering developing microwave image processing algorithms for use in medical diagnostics. In 2017, he won both the First Place and Audience Choice Awards in the first ever 3MT® competition at the IEEE International Microwave Symposium. In 2018, he won first place for the same presentation in the first ever Electrical and Computer Engineering 3MT® competition at McMaster. He is a member of the 2022 IEEE Microwave Week 3MT® committee.

Aline Eid is a PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering at Georgia Tech. Receiver of 16 awards during her masters and PhD studies, inventor in 4 patents, and author/co-author of more than 40 conference and journal papers, she won both the Second Place and Audience Choice Awards in the IEEE IMS2019 3MT® competition. Her goal is to transform environments from passive to intelligent and responsive using wireless beams. She is the Co-Chair of the 2022 IEEE Microwave Week 3MT® committee.

Emily Wood has been captivated by music from a young age. This led her to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Piano Performance at McGill in 2014. After completing a second bachelor’s degree in psychology (2019), Emily began her PhD at McMaster. Currently, Emily studies interpersonal interactions between musicians at McMaster’s LIVELab.

Megan Vierhout is a PhD student in Medical Sciences studying the possible causes of a rare fatal lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. During her graduate studies, she has received multiple presentation awards and competed as a finalist in both McMaster’s GradFlix and 3MT competitions.
