In March 2026, the Office of International Affairs at McMaster University conducted an in‑country visit to Ghana, organized in collaboration with Empowerment Squared, as part of its continued support of the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP). The visit was designed to check in on interns while they were actively engaged in their placements, assess how global learning objectives were being realized in practice, and strengthen the partnerships that underpin meaningful and responsible international engagement. Throughout the visit, interns demonstrated a strong commitment to their work and to the communities they are engaged in. During the internship period, interns work on country‑specific research projects that respond directly to local priorities and are delivered in close collaboration with community partners.
In Ghana, interns contribute to a research project aimed at creating improved educational environments and facilities in rural areas, with a particular focus on women and girls. Intern activities include supporting community‑based research, assisting with data collection and needs assessments related to educational infrastructure and learning conditions, and contributing to community‑led initiatives that promote safe, inclusive, and supportive learning spaces. In Liberia, interns are engaged in a research project focused on empowering grassroots organizations to address substance abuse, drug addiction, and mental health challenges. Working alongside local partners, interns support research and program activities that strengthen organizational capacity and community responses to these issues. Activities include assisting with data collection and analysis, supporting awareness and prevention initiatives.
Through these applied research projects and community‑based activities, interns gain practical professional experience while developing critical global competencies such as intercultural communication, adaptability, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement. These learning outcomes are central to McMaster’s global engagement strategy and reflect the university’s commitment to preparing students to navigate complex global contexts with care and responsibility. Within IYIP, interns are not only learners but contributors, working alongside community partners who bring deep contextual knowledge and leadership.
IYIP is delivered through a partnership between McMaster University and Empowerment Squared and is strengthened by coordinated collaboration across McMaster University, including the Student Success Center and the Black Student Success Centre, which support students throughout the internship lifecycle. Through advising, holistic student support, and equity‑informed approaches, this collaborative effort helps ensure that interns are prepared to engage confidently in international placements and are supported before departure, while abroad, and upon return.
Looking ahead, the program continues to build momentum. Cohort 4 of the International Youth Internship Program will depart in May 2026 for Ghana and Liberia, extending these opportunities to a new group of participants. Applications are now open for the January 2027 cohort, and eligible students are encouraged to apply for this funded international internship experience that combines professional development with engaged global learning.
