A literature search done in a systematic manner was first used to identify the existence of any guidelines for foreign health workers intending to respond to a sudden onset disaster. This was followed by grounded theory analysis of semi-structured interviews of heath sector responders to the 2015 Nepal earthquake. Their knowledge, awareness of guidelines, observations and actions in the field were examined to better understand the existence and knowledge translation of guidelines. A manuscript of the study results has been submitted for publication.
Impact
Evidence of a lack of guidelines for potential responders, coupled with the continuing influx to disaster zones of poorly prepared health sector practitioners, suggest the need to reconsider how disaster response is viewed by the health professions, particularly in terms of education.
