The project covers the period from 500 BCE to 800 CE and sweeps across China and to its north and west, the vast inner Asian steppes. Using current methodologies in art history, anthropology, and archaeology on technology and culture, the project aims to substantiate complex interactions between various pastoral nomadic groups among themselves, with the sedentary ethnic Han Chinese farmers as well as itinerant traders of Central Asia and South Asia. The project also aims to delineate interactions across the boundaries of ethnicity, gender, and hierarchy.
