The program, working with the Faculty of Health Sciences, facilitates bi-directional exchange of medical learners between McMaster and academic centres in Uganda, Guyana, Haiti and Namibia. Working closely with Post-Graduate Medical Education, and the Ontario College of Physicians, we offer unique, "hands-on" training that is not available elsewhere in the world. Trainees come to Canada for 3 to 12 months of Internal Medicine and Sub-specialty training, while our residents travel to the same countries for one month experiences. This program also extends to other Departments in FHS.
Impact
Our program establishes medical excellence in our partner countries as attested by the fact that our graduates now have attained senior leadership positions in their home countries. We are also now setting up programs in research and leadership development, all of which will hasten the development of "cutting edge" medical care in these resource limited countries. These programs also act as recruitment and retention initiatives for or faculty and students.
Student Experience
Fosters understanding of challenges for care in resource limited environments; Encourages frank discussions about resourced allocation; Provides recruitment and retention incentive for McMaster; Provides opportunity to liaise with international colleagues with whom contact would otherwise be impossible.
