McMaster hosted the 14th annual Bethune Round Table Conference, the premier global surgery conference in Canada, hosted by the Departments of Surgery, Anesthesia and Obstetrics/Gynecology. The 2014 conference, themed “Improving Global Outcomes Through Safer Surgery”, included keynote speaker Dr. James Orbinski, 48 podium and poster presentations , and 150 participants from 17 countries and 49 organizations. Fifteen scholars from low-to middle-income African countries received travel scholarships. All abstracts were published in the Canadian Journal of Surgery.
Impact
Visiting scholars presented their research, new education and research partnerships were initiated, and participants linked with global surgery organizations such as St. Joseph's International Outreach Program based in Hamilton, and the Canadian Network for International Surgery. Students presented papers, networked with mentors, and identified roles in new projects. The success of the conference has been followed by increasingly popular subsequent Bethune meetings across Canada..
Student Experience
Participants listened to surgeons, anesthesiologists and obstetricians from low-resource settings and learned first hand about their challenges and successes. Many were motivated to contribute through ongoing education, research and service projects.
